Why painting is different in Detroit
Most of Detroit was built in the first half of the 1900s. Inside a typical house you find plaster walls, tall ceilings and wide wood trim with many coats of old paint. Outside, the walls are often brick, and the painting is in the wood: windows, cornices, porches, dormers and gables. Because these homes were built before 1978, old paint may contain lead, and scraping or sanding it has to be done with lead-safe methods.
The weather sets the calendar. Winters swing above and below freezing again and again, which opens caulk joints and lifts paint from sills and porch floors. Exterior paint needs mild, dry days, so the outdoor season runs from about mid May to early October. Interior work goes on all year. In the city's local historic districts, the Historic District Commission reviews exterior painting before it starts.
How we work
We walk the job, measure and talk through colors and sheen. You get a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. Before painting we cover floors and furniture and repair and prime the surfaces. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job. Then come two coats, a full clean-up and a final walk-through with you. Most interior rooms take one to two days, and a full exterior usually takes three to five days, depending on the weather.
