Detroit Painters works for homeowners, landlords and business owners in Detroit and the nearby cities, from Dearborn and Hamtramck to the Grosse Pointes, Southfield and Oak Park. We paint the inside and outside of houses, two flats, apartments, shops and offices. The same crew handles the smaller jobs that go with painting, such as plaster and drywall repair, cabinet finishing, deck and fence staining, wallpaper removal and washing. We are licensed and insured.
Much of the housing here is brick and was built in the first half of the last century. That gives painters wood trim, porches and gables outside, and plaster walls with wide woodwork inside. Old coats may contain lead in any home built before 1978, so we prepare those surfaces with care. Winters freeze and thaw again and again, summers are humid, and exterior paint can only go on from about May into early October. We plan each job around those facts.
A job starts with a visit. We look at the surfaces, ask what you want and send a written quote that names the areas, the prep, the products and the number of coats. On the agreed day we cover floors, furniture and plants, do the repairs, then prime and paint. The site is tidied at the end of each day. How much does it cost to paint a house in Detroit?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, interior painting costs $3,500 to $10,000 for a whole house and exterior painting $3,000 to $10,000 for a 2,000 square foot house. Those are not our quotes. Plaster repairs, trim, height and prep set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
Do painters need a license in Michigan?
Not for painting alone. Michigan removed painting and decorating from its licensed trades in March 2019. Carpentry, siding and other house trades still need a state license for jobs of $600 or more. Detroit Painters is licensed and insured.
My Detroit house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?
Assume old paint may contain lead until it is tested. Under the federal RRP rule, a firm paid to disturb paint in a pre-1978 home must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified. Ask any painter to show that certificate before work starts.
When is the best time to paint the outside of a house in Detroit?
From about mid May to early October. Paint needs mild temperatures and dry walls, and most labels set a minimum of 35 to 50 degrees. Interior painting goes on all year.
Do I need a permit or approval to paint my house in Detroit?
No building permit is needed for painting alone. In Detroit's local historic districts, the Historic District Commission must approve exterior painting first. HOAs and condo associations set their own color rules.
How long does a paint job take?
Most rooms take one to two days. A full exterior usually takes three to five days, depending on the weather and the amount of scraping and priming.
